Sara's Surprise premieres at Underneath Cincinnati
posted January 23 :::
A crowd of about fifty people braved the cold and skipped the NFL playoffs to check out the first Underneath Cincinnati screening of 2004, which featured my second short movie, Sara's Surprise. The show was held January 18, 2004 at The Mockbee on West McMicken.
Sara's Surprise tells the story of Alex and Sara as they travel back to Cincinnati from Columbus during the Thanksgiving weekend. The story weaves past and present to show where Alex and Sara's relationship is at and why she's upset with him. It's a low-key, moody little movie. The nice thing about Imitation (my other short movie) is that, since it's a comedy, I can tell if the audience likes it or not, whereas, during the Sara's Surprise screening, I didn’t know what anyone was thinking. Although I think Sara's Surprise is a comedy, in a Chekhov-esque, comedy without any jokes sort of way. (Not that it's quite operating on Chekhov's level, but what is?)
Underneath Cincinnati has additional screenings planned for April, August and November of 2004, in addition to the Best of 2003 show (featuring Imitation) at the Cincinnati Art Museum on February 20. For more info check out www.underneathcincinnati.com.
